If I can make $1000 a month on a single link, then it makes perfect sense that 10 links can bring in a cool $10,000. -- Unfortunately this is not so!
Beginners generally start out by signing up for every affiliate advertiser that they can get there hands on and follow up by splashing all their web content with truck loads of links. It is no wonder that they end up feeling disappointed and abandon affiliate marketing with idea that everything they read about how much money they can make doing it is a crock.
The key to successful affiliate marketing is matching your ads to your content. Even that is an over simplification. The problem is, how do you match your ads to your content.
All marketing and advertising must start with a marketing plan. The plan is broken down into steps called marketing campaigns. Campaigns can be seasonal or they can be attempts of trial and error. You can set up some campaigns as matching or complementary to your content. Some of your campaigns you will also try positioning your ads in different areas on the page. There are no hard set rules, that is because every audience is different.
Matching campaigns advertise products directly related to your content topic. For example if the topic is Beer and Beer tasting the page would advertise Beer, books on beer or beer tasting, specialty items like beer tasting gloves (if they exist) and glasses to drink beer etc ...
Complementary campaigns advertise products that would most likely be purchased along with products of your topic. Using the same topic as the example above, my ECO-101 course in university used the example of Peanuts as in Beer and Peanuts. Peanuts have nothing to do with Beer or Beer tasting but they are likely to be consumed along with the beer.
To your readers, your web page must be about the content. You must limit your ads to one or three. If you over do it, you will loose your audience and you will lose your SEO ranking. Don\t loose your readers before you had a chance to try out a few campaigns.
You must also follow up on a your plan. If an ad is not working - change it. Try banners, change the size, try text ads. Keep track of results by keeping notes of what works and what doesn't.
If you do not succeed, try and try again - eventually you will hit pay dirt.
